Volunteer Opportunities

The CRNYHS Full-Time
Volunteer Program

Mission Statement:
“Give me O Lord, a love full of action.” – Cornelia Connelly

The Cristo Rey NY Volunteers aspire to demonstrate the Christian values of social justice, community and simplicity by serving Cristo Rey students in all aspects of their spiritual and intellectual growth.

Program Snapshot:

WHO:
The Cristo Rey NY Volunteer Program seeks dynamic, thoughtful young men and women of promise who are committed to sharing their many gifts and talents with our students.

WHAT:
Our school is designed to reach economically disadvantaged students in New York City who would normally be unable to afford a Catholic or private secondary education.  Our volunteer program was inspired by the great success of the JAV (Jesuit Alumni Volunteer Program) at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago, IL.

WHERE:
Cristo Rey NY High School is located in East Harlem, also known as El Barrio, a richly diverse community in New York City.

WHEN:
Full-time volunteers serve for two years, beginning in mid-August of year one and ending in late June of year two.  Volunteers will also attend a week long teacher training session provided by the Cristo Rey Network, in Chicago, IL in July of year one.

HOW:
Volunteers serve the Cristo Rey community in various ways, such as teaching, assistant teaching, moderating extra-curricular activities, coaching, and training and chaperoning students in support of our Corporate Work Study Program.

Benefits:

  • Week long teacher training program with the Cristo Rey Network in Chicago prior to year one
  • Mentoring by experienced teachers
  • Opportunities for professional education and development at Fordham University
  • Opportunities for spiritual and personal growth
  • Two year loan forbearance through the AmeriCorps Program

Cristo Rey volunteers wear many hats at the school--they are teachers, coaches, directors, supervisors, and more!

FAQs:
"You too can perform miracles by touching the hearts of the children confided to your care.”- St. John Baptist de La Salle

What is the living situation like for volunteers?

  • Volunteers live simpy and in community along with six other members of the Cristo Rey faculty at the former Immaculate Conception Convent, aslo known as the Hub, located at 371 East 150th Street in the Bronx. Each resident has his or her own room
  • All residents share a large common room, office, dining room, one large kitchen, two washers and two dryers
  • All residents share housekeeping and cooking duties

What is the transportation arrangement for volunteers?
An additional $89 per month is provided (on top of the stipend) to purchase a monthly Metrocard.  Our school is conveniently located 3 blocks away from the 103rd St. Subway Stop on the 6 line.

Do the volunteers have retreats or reflection time?
There are three scheduled retreats/reflection periods during the school year. These retreats are highly recommended so that volunteers can take time to reflect and rejuvenate, but they are not mandatory.  Faculty members that live at the Hub are welcome to join the opening retreat and spring retreat, but the mid-year retreat is for CRNYHS Volunteers only.  The following is the retreat schedule for 09-10:

    • Hub Community Opening Retreat, September 11th-13th, Jesuit Retreat House, Seabright, NJ
    • CRNYHS Volunteers Mid-Year Reflection, January 8th-10th, Linwood Spiritual Center, Rhinebeck, NY
    • Hub Community Spring Retreat, May 14th-16th, Jesuit Retreat House, Seabright, NJ
Is the two year commitment mandatory?

All volunteers are asked to commit to a two-year experience, and this is for the benefit of both our school and our volunteers.  The first year allows the volunteer to be exposed to several areas and learn the basic functions of a school, while the second year allows volunteers to hone in on specific subjects or activities and truly allow the skills they learned in year one to flourish.

What are the financial arrangements?  Will I have insurance?

    • Volunteers each receive $450 a month for food and personal expenses
    • The school provides furnished housing, utilities, and health and dental insurance
    • Volunteers are also eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 for each year of service
How are the volunteers’ jobs assigned?

The Program Coordinator, in conjunction with the President and Principal of CRNYHS, aims to place each volunteer in a position that best fits his/her gifts, interests, knowledge, and experience with the needs of our students.   All volunteers will teach or assistant teach one or two courses according to the needs of the school and the volunteer’s ability and previous training.   For volunteers who lack teaching experience, we will match up the volunteer with a mentor teacher.

Like all faculty members, volunteers are regularly called upon to assist with the supervision of students before school, in study halls, in the computer lab, during lunch, during physical education class, and in proctoring exams.

Volunteers also coach athletic teams and moderate clubs and student organizations according to their own interests and the needs of the school.
